Dental Emergencies: How to Handle Common Orthodontic Issues

Orthodontic treatments can sometimes come with unexpected challenges. It’s important to know how to handle common dental emergencies to ensure your treatment progresses smoothly and comfortably. Here are some typical problems that patients may face, along with advice on how to manage them.

Tooth Tenderness

As you get used to your new braces, it’s normal for your teeth to feel tender and for you to experience a dull ache for the first 2-4 days. To alleviate this discomfort, we recommend eating soft foods during this initial adjustment period. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be helpful. Additionally, a warm saltwater rinse can soothe tender areas. If you’re using accessory appliances like rubber bands, springs, or headgear, they might cause temporary soreness, which should subside within 2-4 days when worn as prescribed. Lip and Cheek Sores

New braces can sometimes cause small sores on your lips or cheeks. This is a common issue during the initial adjustment period. Over time, your lips and cheeks will become less sensitive. If you notice any part of your braces irritating the inside of your mouth, place a small piece of wax on the troublesome area. For immediate relief, you can use a topical anesthetic like Orabase® or Orajel®.

Loose Bands and Brackets

Brackets and bands can break if you eat certain prohibited foods or pick at your braces. If this happens and you experience discomfort, place a piece of wax on the area causing irritation. Generally, a broken bracket is not an emergency and can be repaired at your next scheduled appointment. However, if the broken bracket causes significant discomfort, if it is supposed to hold a rubber band in place, or if it involves one of the upper or lower front teeth, please call our office, and we will arrange an appointment as soon as possible.

Pokey Wires

Loose wires can result from eating sticky foods or picking at your braces. If a wire protrudes and causes irritation, use a Q-tip or clean pencil eraser to push the wire back towards the teeth. Placing wax over the irritating spot can also help the cheek to heal and toughen up. If the problem persists, contact our office for assistance. To prevent such issues, avoid biting your fingernails, pens, or pencils.

Loose or Missing Elastic Tie

If you notice a loose or missing elastic tie around a bracket, don’t worry. These ties can be fixed or replaced during your next appointment.

Accidents to the Mouth

If you experience a bump or trauma to your mouth during orthodontic treatment and your teeth are hurt, please call our office immediately. We will conduct a short examination to ensure no damage has been done.
